You buy a sustainably made garment, and it arrives wrapped in a plastic polybag that'll exist for 500 years. Something doesn't add up. Here's why packaging matters — and what a better approach looks like.

The Hidden Plastic Problem in Fashion

The fashion industry produces an estimated 180 billion polybags every year. These are the thin plastic bags that protect individual garments during shipping and storage. The vast majority end up in landfill or the ocean, where they fragment into microplastics but never fully decompose. Even brands that use organic fabrics and ethical production often default to standard poly shipping materials because compostable alternatives cost more.

At Sown Again, we decided that sustainability has to extend beyond the garment itself. If we're committed to fair trade, certified organic production, the packaging shouldn't undermine that promise.

What "Home Compostable" Actually Means

There's an important distinction between industrially compostable and home compostable. Industrially compostable materials require high-temperature commercial composting facilities to break down — facilities that most people don't have access to. In practice, industrially compostable packaging often ends up in landfill anyway.

Home compostable packaging breaks down in a standard backyard compost bin or food scraps pile, at normal ambient temperatures. When you receive a Sown Again order, the packaging can go straight into your garden waste. No special facility required. It decomposes into organic matter within a few months, leaving no microplastics behind.

What Our Packaging Is Made Of

Our mailers and garment bags are made from plant-based materials — primarily cornstarch and PBAT (a biodegradable polymer). They're certified to international home composting standards, meaning they've been tested and verified to break down fully in home composting conditions.

The trade-off is cost. Home compostable mailers cost significantly more per unit than standard plastic polybags. We absorb that cost because we believe the packaging is part of the product — if the product claims to be sustainable, every touchpoint should reflect that.

The Bigger Picture: End-to-End Thinking

Sustainability isn't a single decision — it's a chain of decisions that either reinforce or contradict each other. At Sown Again, that chain looks like this:

  • Raw materials: Certified organic cotton grown in Tamil Nadu, India
  • Production: Fair trade, carbon-neutral sewing facility that upcycles fabric offcuts into bags for surrounding villages
  • Fabric: No synthetic pesticides, no GMO seeds, significantly lower water usage
  • Packaging: 100% home compostable — mailers, garment bags, everything

Each link in this chain matters. A brand that uses organic cotton but ships in plastic has made a good start — but it's not the whole picture. We believe consumers in 2026 are paying attention to the full lifecycle, not just the label.

What You Can Do

Next time you order from any brand, check what the packaging is made of. If it's standard plastic, consider reaching out and asking if they've explored compostable alternatives. Consumer demand is the single biggest driver of industry change.

And when your Sown Again order arrives — toss the packaging in the compost. It'll be soil in a few months.
